Seachtáin na Gaeilge

There will be a Féile in the hall on Monday with a lot of activities for all classes to participate in as Gaeilge.

On Tuesday, there will be a Margadh Cístí (cake sale) that 6th class is organising. If pupils would like to contribute, they can make some buns, fairy cakes or Rice Krispies cakes (no nuts allowed) and bring them in on Tuesday morning when 6th class will collect them. Pupils may bring in some money to buy some of the tasty treats. All the money raised from the cake sale will go towards the 6th class tour.

We invite parents to join in on the celebrations on Thursday for Féile Lá Padraigh. We will be celebrating our Irish language and culture through song, drama and dance. We will also be teaching the simple Irish phrases that can be found on our facebook page.

I look forward to seeing the whole school community together on Thursday.

Kind regards

Tim

School Car Park Safety

It is always worthwhile having a discussion with children about road safety and to remind them to stay on the footpaths on their journey to/from school and once they reach the school car-park. Please remind them of the importance of looking both ways before they cross the road (even at pedestrian crossings). Some parents may find it helpful to wait with younger pupils outside the front of the school in the mornings until the doors open.

The National Gallery of Ireland have a range of workshops and exhibitions this March. There are some particularly interesting workshops on this month and most are absolutely free! Click this link to see what’s on!

Junior Infants

Spring has sprung in Maeve & Michelle’s junior infant room. We have been learning all about the changes that Spring brings, the flowers and the birds. We also enjoyed making Valentine cards and we brought home the daffodil bulbs that we planted last Autumn, that are ready to flower!
We are very excited about the drama that we will be performing soon and we are practicing very hard. Roll on Feile La Padraig!

This month Junior Infants have moved onto their second reader, and have learned lots of new sight words and tricky words. We celebrated the Chinese New Year by learning all about it, by doing lots of art work based on the celebration and by parading around the school with the other Junior Infant classes! We had lots of fun. This month we are learning about people who help us in our community and our Aistear playstations are based around the vet, and we’ve helped many animals already!

Shauna’s class welcome Adam who is helping to teach us at the moment. We have been learning about lots of fun things for example people who work in our community. We love playing in our doctors surgery and have taken many X-ray in our X-ray machine. We are also busy practising for our play ‘An Buachailín Sínséir’ which we will be performing during Seachtain na Gaeilge.

Senior Infants

In Paul’s Senior Infants for past two weeks we have been learning about Dinosaurs. We had several dinosaur related stations during Aistear. One of the most popular of which was when we all played the role of palaeontologists at the sand station. We searched in the sand, found bones and assembled them to make dinosaur fossils. We have also been learning the names of several dinosaurs and other big words like herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. In Maths we carried out some dinosaur related surveys, the class were asked if they would like dinosaurs to come back to earth and the majority voted Yes! Another survey we did was to find out everyone’s favourite type of dinosaur. The most popular was the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

This month our attention is turning towards the topic of Spring and life cycles.

Labhaoise’s Senior Infants have been excited about Spring and have been learning about the Blackthorn Blossom and the life cycle of a frog. We have also had fun making our own clocks and learning about time in maths. Last week we wrote a recipe for pancakes before making them in class. We even got to flip them in the pan (only one fell on the floor!) and took advantage of the beautiful sunshine by having a pancake picnic on the benches.

Ciara’s class have been learning about spring animals and flowers. We have made a lot of different flowers in our art lessons such as snow drops, daffodils and cherry blossom. We are investigating how shadows are made and had lots of fun creating and tracing our shadows in the yard. We are very excited about Seachtain na Gaeilge and are busy learning some songs and poems as Gaeilge.

1st Class

Elaine’s class have been learning all about 3D shapes. They made and decorated cubes in art and labelled the 3D shapes they could see in their room. The children are making a friendship flower for art and learn together. Each petal shows what they think a good friend is and the middle is a piece of art the children are currently completing together. We also celebrated pancake Tuesday with some well deserved pancakes and sprinkles!

Mallories 1st class have been busy this month designing homes and buildings. They carried out fun and exciting experiments creating static electricity.

Niamh’s 1st class are working on learning about halves and doubles and improving their skip-counting skills in Maths. We are looking at months and seasons and what happens in Springtime. We are building on our reading, sounds and sentence writing skills with Brid and Sharon. We completed a beautiful series of paintings for a Vincent van Gogh study: Café Terrace at Night, Sunflowers and Starry Night.

2nd Class

Aisleen’s class are very busy learning the Ballaí Luimnigh dance for the Féile Naomh Pádraig on the 14th March. We are dancing with the other two 2nd classes. We are also making lovely green decorations for the hall.

Second class have been learning all about their local area of Tyrrelstown. We looked at maps and our favourite parts of the locality. We performed a song for everyone at assembly, which we really enjoyed. We ate pancakes and tasted lots of different toppings! Nutella was our favourite! We started swimming lessons are so excited for the next few weeks of it!

Naomi’s second class has been busy learning all about our Solar System. We have been looking at the Nasa website and reading books about space. We drew the planets in orbit around the sun and are learning The Solar System Song. We are also getting ready for the school’s St Patrick’s day festivities by making decorations and practicing our set dancing.

3rd Class

Louise’s 3rd class have been learning about the Titanic this month and writing newspaper articles about the sinking of the ship. In maths, we were learning about decimals and graphs. We surveyed some other classes and made graphs of the results. We had a pyjama party on Friday 15th which was lots of fun. As well as swimming, we are starting GAA lessons with our coach Larry. This week, we are going on a tour to Fighting Words – a writing workshop in the city centre, followed by a trip to Phoenix Park. We love to learn inside and outside the classroom!

Aidan’s 3rd class are looking forward to a trip to Marsh’s Library in Dublin City for an Engineer’s Week workshop this week.

Niamh C’s class celebrated Pancake Tuesday by having a pancake party. We have been learning about what makes a good friend and have written compliments to each other. We also created a friendship recipe, listing all the positive ingredients that make up a good friend. We are enjoying learning about length and have been estimating and measuring objects in the classroom. We are very excited about Seachtain na Gaeilge and have been practising our Gaeilge songs and poems. We are very happy to have started hurling with our GAA coach Larry.

4th Class

Meredith and Lisa’s class have been working on persuasive writing for the past few weeks. We wrote some persuasive pieces on topics that we felt strongly about. We then reviewed and edited them before typing them up on the Chromebooks and displaying them in the classroom. We have also had fun playing Kahoot on the Chromebooks!

In Science we had good fun with a “bouncing raisins” experiment, predicting what would happen when raisins were put in fizzy lemonade, conducting the experiment and recording the results.

We had a special visitor to the class to tell us about her home country of Nigeria. We tried out an oji (mortar) and eikpo (pestle) used for grinding and mashing foods such as yam, corn, and tomatoes. Everyone tried to see if they could snap a traditional Nigerian sweeping brush, and found — to our surprise — that no one could! It taught us a lesson about the importance of working together: if everyone works as a team, we are unbreakable like the brush, but if we work against each other we aren’t as strong, just as the individual fibers of the brush can be snapped.

Jodie’s class have been learning about length in maths. They had great fun measuring each other in groups and creating life-sized skeletons to match their measurements. They also estimated and timed how long it would take them to run a hundred meters. Our class record was 100m in 17 seconds.

We are working as problem-solvers and inventing our own strategies for multi-digit multiplication during Maths stations. We’re learning the lyrics to Shotgun as gaeilge for Seachtain na Gaeilge. We’re looking for forward to our school tour to Marsh library.

5th Class

Denis’s fifth class have begun learning to use Google Slides. They are currently creating their own adventure stories where the decisions that you make as you read through the story determine your chances of survival. They have also been preparing Irish songs to sing and play for Seachtain na Gaeilge.

Karen’s class are taking part in “Mindful March”. We will be taking on some new activities such as exercising and enjoying nature. We have started a gratitude journal where we write down and appreciate all the things we have. There are many activities listed in the calendar if anyone would like to join us!

Mary’s class is participating in Glasnevin Cemetery Museum’s new pilot programme for schools, ‘Engaging with Our Past, Exploring Multiple Narratives’. It allows students to navigate the period from 1912 – 1923, starting with an introduction to Home Rule, World War 1, right up the Irish Civil War. Glasnevin Cemetery have provided the students with colourful educational booklets and lesson materials which when completed will be used during our free tour to Glasnevin Cemetery.

6th Class

Báetán’s class have been learning about Northern Ireland. We have examined some of the murals painted on the walls of Belfast and Derry and have begun to create our own class mural.

Next week the senior boys GAA team will play St Lukes in the first round of the Tyrrelstown League.
This league will feature 4 local schools:

  • Tyrrelstown Educate Together National School
  • St Lukes
  • Gaelscoil an Chuilinn
  • Powerstown ETNS

The first game will take place on Thursday March 14th v St Lukes.

Gerry’s class started reading the novel “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio last week. Many people may have seen the movie, but it’s a wonderful uplifting story about kindness, friendship and respect as a boy called August embarks on a difficult journey through school. You can’t blend in when you were born to stand out, and one of the lessons we learned was that “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind!”

From next Tuesday, the three 6th classes will be going over to Le Chéile Secondary School to do a series of Spikeball lessons with their T.Y. students, and we’re all looking forward to it.

Our Swimming lessons have been brilliant so far and well done to all the children who make sure to remember all of their gear each week.

The swim instructors have commented on the excellent behaviour and marked progress of the TETNS children so far.

We have a margadh cistí (bake sale) next Tuesday, during Seachtain na Gaeilge, where any baked goods the students bring in, will be sold through Irish, to raise funds for the end of year 6th class tour.

Setanta

In Setanta we have been looking at lots of different ways to relax and calm ourselves by doing mindfulness colouring, listening to music, playing with instruments, doing breathing exercises, counting down and doing finger aerobics.
