Newsletter Nov/Dec 2025

A note from Tim

Dear children, parents and guardians,

What an amazing first term we have had here in Tyrrelstown ETNS! It has been fantastic to see the children meet their new teachers and classmates for 2025/2026 and there has been huge excitement around the school.

I have been really impressed with all of the hard work and energy shown by all of the children and I want to encourage them to keep this up in 2026. They all have so much potential and it is lovely to witness them develop in all curricular activities as well as maturing into very socially conscious children.

We are all really looking forward to our Winter Performances this week and after that the children will get a well deserved couple of weeks off to spend at home having fun and making memories with their families and recharging their batteries for 2026.

Look after yourselves,

Tim

Our class has been having lots of fun this term!

We have been practicing for the winter assembly and creating some winter art over the past couple of weeks.

In maths we have been learning about length. In science we learned about sources of light and heat. Everyone has been working really hard during literacy stations everyday too!

Eimear’s 1st Class

All of us in 1st class have had a very exciting and fun learning few weeks. We have been busy with our literacy stations, winter art and have been making a big effort with our Gaeilge. We also did lots of experiments to celebrate Science Week. We have been doing lots of practice for our winter assembly and cannot wait to perform for you next week!

Orla’s 1st Class

We have been exploring lots of fun things in Orla’s 1st class. We are working hard on our Gaeilge and practising it in our daily conversations. As the winter assembly approaches, the children are very excited to showcase what they have been learning over the past few weeks. In science, the children learned all about light. We discovered how light creates shadows and made our very own shadow puppets!

Eoin’s 2nd Class

Eoin’s class has been enjoying learning about Christopher Columbus in History and in Science we experimented building boats to see if they floated. We also designed silhouette paintings with boats and sunsets on the sea.

Lastly in Drama, we saw and participated in a performance called Monster’s Dance from the Draíocht group.

Keith’s 3rd Class

We have been learning how to multiply using arrays, skip-counting, multiples boards, repeated addition and grouping. Some of us like to draw out word problems to help figure them out.

In English we’ve been learning about persuasive texts and how to use persuasive language to sound convincing.

During Science Week we also learned how to build tall structures with strong, broad bases. We did some chromatography and we learned how heat can affect different materials in a bouncy-ball experiment.

We also welcomed Julie and Ben to our classroom to interview them about schools, homes, climate, culture, flora and fauna in their countries!

Paul’s 4th Class

Paul’s 4th Class have had a wonderfully busy few weeks filled with learning and creativity. As part of our history work, we explored the lives of our grandparents and discovered some of the traditional games they enjoyed in the past. Inspired by this, we have also been learning about the rules and respectful play that the game of chess encourages, and the class have loved putting their new skills into practice during our chess sessions.

We recently enjoyed a fantastic trip to Abbotstown, where all 4th Class pupils had the opportunity to take part in football activities supported by qualified FAI coaches. The children showed great teamwork, enthusiasm and energy throughout the day.

Back in the classroom, our creativity has been shining through with some wonderful art inspired by 2D shapes. The results have been colourful, imaginative and a great showcase of the children’s hard work.

Shane’s 4th Class

This term we went to the FAI football workshop with Paul’s class. We did loads of football warm ups and matches, it was so much fun!

We did lots of different activities during Science Week including; designing paper gliders, tin foil boats and separating the various dyes found in marker ink.

In music we have been learning how to play the tin whistle and the ukulele, but for the past few weeks we have been focusing on learning to play the xylophones for the upcoming Winter Assembly.

In art, we made mosaics using lasagna sheets instead of tiles. You can see them hanging in the windows of our classroom.

Aisleen’s 5th Class

Aisleen’s 5th class have been really enjoying the Olympic Movement breaks challenge. We really enjoyed discussing how we were feeling before and after each activity.

Only in the last few weeks, our class have been learning the tin-whistle for the first time. We already know 3 tunes and we’re now learning our fourth. We also know how to play the scale of D.

We enjoy our quiz day every Friday where we work in groups while trying to answer questions as Gaeilge (in Irish), general knowledge, spellings and maths.

In Team Teaching, we were really enjoying the history of the piano and we got to listen to the clavichord, pipe organ, piano, harpsichord and keyboard. We particularly enjoyed listening to 80’s tunes on the synthesiser.

In Art, we have been drawing winter themed pictures in chalk.

Mallorie’s 5th Class

Another busy few weeks in Mallorie’s 5th class with  lots of learning and activities happening. Lots of planning and preparation is going on for their winter assembly performance and they are very much looking forward to the parents coming to see them perform.

They have also  been studying their local environment and went on a field trip around the local area gathering information in their locality and creating projects.

We had Science Week recently where lots of fun science experiments were carried out. The children made their own volcanoes which they were able to make erupt.

Claire C’s 6th Class

During Science Week, scientists from BMS visited and did fun, hands-on experiments with us. We’ve been learning about the GAA before our exciting history tour to Croke Park. In writing, we’re working on persuasive speeches to convince local residents to allow more concerts in the stadium. In Geography, we’ve been studying European capital cities. Fractions and long division are our main Maths topics, and in Gaeilge we’re learning about Bia. We’re also busy practicing for our winter assembly and working on catching and landing skills in PE.

Claire N’s 6th Class

Is mise Sarah and I will be writing about what we’ve been doing in Claire N’s 6th Class.

To decorate the classroom, we designed winter art scenes. In Maths, we learnt how to do Long Division and about fractions. In History, we’ve been learning about the GAA, Croke Park and Bloody Sunday. We can’t wait to visit Croke Park to learn more about it. In English we’ve been practising Persuasive Writing and rhetorical questions – can it get much better than that?!

For Science Week in November, we designed Marble Runs from recyclable materials. Check them out in the picture below!

Slán agus go raibh maith agat! 🙂

Francis’ 6th Class

For Science Week, 6th class engaged in a challenge to design and build the slowest marble run possible. It was a fun task that used a lot of critical thinking, engineering, problem solving, teamwork, trial and error!

Other areas we have been studying are long division and fractions in Maths, persuasive writing in English, catching and landing in PE, playing xylophones in Music, papercraft in Art and exploring Irish grammar through games.

Our next task is the Winter assembly performance; we’re sure to master it!
